One of the main challenges is the need to balance growth and biomass harvesting with the protection of the natural environment and the long-term sustainability of ecosystems. It is an interesting fact that optimal management of agricultural and forestry land is key to improving biomass yields while minimising negative impacts on biodiversity and soil quality, which can contribute to the ecological stability of a country. Innovative technologies receiving increasing attention include pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion and thermochemical conversion processes. These technologies allow biomass to be converted more efficiently into bioenergy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, plants such as miscanthus and switchgrass are considered highly efficient for biomass production in agricultural areas, while residues from forest harvesting can be used effectively in industrial applications for biofuel production. The challenge is effective lignite depletion, which is one of the main barriers in the processing of ligno-cellulosic biomass. Engineering techniques such as enzyme hydrolysis and chemical pre-treatment are being developed to make the process more efficient.
